Key growth factors of 200mm Semiconductor Fabs

Date: 19/04/2022
Below are some of the Key facts, trends, drivers and forecasts on the 200 mm semiconductor fab capacity:

200 mm fabs continue to be in business upto 2030. It is estimated a total of more than 213 200 mm fabs are active in the world . In terms of installed capacity it is expected to hit 6.4 million wafers per month by 2022.

200 mm fabs are widespread Geographically, the region like Malaysia, which does not have very latest advanced fabs but has lot of 200 mm capacity.

Covid is one of the major factor in rising the demand for chips made in 200 MM fabs.

Electric cars, rebound of PC market growth, and growth of medical wearables, and some kind of demand in every application driving this market. 5G, automotive and IoT devices that use analog, power management and display driver integrated circuits (Ics), MOSFETs, microcontroller units (MCUs) and sensors are made on 200 mm wafers.
Inventory replenishment orders and repeat orders is also driving the 200 MM growth.

200 mm fabs are used to make chips down to the nodes of 65 nm.
Utilisation rate of 200 mm fabs is in the range of 90 to 100%

Nearly from past 10 years this market has not seen any downfall in growth.

Lam Research ASM Litho, Canon and Nikon are the major vendors of 200 mm semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Repairing and refurbishing of 200mm semiconductor equipment is becoming difficult due to lack of supply of older spares and new replacement is less in supply and taking lot of lead time.

200mm fab capacity to be up by 1.2 million wafers, a growth of 21% from 2020 to 2024 to hit a record high of 6.9 million wafers per month. 200mm fab equipment spending is expected to be $4.9 billion in 2022.
