Small screen LCD market strategy: Sony and Seiko Epson to form alliance

The weak economy in year 2009 might have flattened small screen LCD market but the growth in this segment may happen anytime. The dynamics of portable electronic market may change anytime in global market and more particularly in emerging economies like India and China, triggering a huge demand for small and medium size LCDs.

Japanese LCD makers Sony and Seiko Epson are in the process of talks for an alliance to produce small- and medium-sized liquid crystal displays (LCDs), including the transfer of a part of business assets of Epson to Sony. The parties hope to enter into a legally binding definitive agreement by the end of June 2009.

The combination of Epson's amorphous silicon TFT and low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT technologies and Sony's wide customer base will help to take on the future LCD market opportunities.

LCD market is clearly dominated by Japanese, Korean (mainly Samsung) and Taiwanese companies, but in high-end next generation technologies it's the Japanese companies taking the major share. China has many medium size companies with lot of scope for taking over its competitors.

Until now the mobile phone displays panels used to be the chief consumer of small and medium sized TFT LCD panels. In coming years, low cost netbook market might create another big opportunity for these LCD panels.

The competition is gearing up so much in advance, waiting to grab every oppotunity the moment it pops up.
